Energy and mining operations in Ecuador remain stable

Energy and mining operations in Ecuador remain stable

In a recent report, Ecuador’s Ministry of Energy and Mines assures that the country’s electricity, hydrocarbon, and mining sectors continue to operate smoothly. Ecuadorians find relief in this news, which ensures the uninterrupted supply of essential services, which include fuel and electricity.

January 9th marked a milestone in terms of oil production, with 492,343 barrels of crude oil being produced. Out of this total, 402,018 barrels were produced by the state oil company, EP Petroecuador, and 90,325 barrels by private operators. The Trans-Ecuadorian Oil Pipeline System (SOTE, by its initials in Spanish) has maintained operations at the usual rate, transporting an average of 264,880 barrels per day. In the field of refining, refineries in Esmeraldas, Shushufindi, and La Libertad process around 90,000 barrels per day, despite ongoing maintenance works on Unit 2 in Esmeraldas.

The mining sector is not lagging behind, maintaining its full operability and with ongoing support from the central government. This sector plays a crucial role in the economy as it ensures the exports of mining products while focusing on its workers’ safety and well-being.

As for electrical service, the generation, transmission, and distribution system is operating at full capacity. The country is mainly supplied by hydroelectricity (74%), followed by thermal generation (25%), and a minimal amount of imported electricity. With a daily consumption of 92.2 GWh and a maximum power of 4,575 MW, energy rationing has been suspended until January 15th, 2024, thus ensuring a continuous supply for all Ecuadorians.
